Interesting article by Lisa Falkenberg this morning on her analysis of the 351st Judicial Race. Um. not quite sure what to say about it, so I'll let you guys do the talking.
On an unrelated side note, I will be legally changing my name to Joe Kickass.
An insider's view of what is really happening in the Harris County Criminal Courts

What's not to be sure about? It's the Harris County version of what happened in states like S. Carolina, where they can elect state wide democrats who are white, but vote against a black president. Same thing happened alla cross rural Texas, people voted democrat for many local elections, but Republican because they didn't want a black president.
To deny this is patently ignorant at best (because stupid people shouldn't be held as accountable as the rest of us), and intentional cognitive dissonance at worst.
After reading the article, I thought about changing my name to "Moxie Crimefighter," but apparently, Penn of "Penn and Teller" fame has already claimed it for his daughter. And, Mekiesha thinks she's got name issues.
There are lots of reasons a "damn good attorney" two years out of the DA's office would be advertising in the Greensheet, and most of them have nothing to do with the lawyer's name.
"(She worked on the South Texas Law Review and, during her tenure at the DA's office, she said she lost only one felony case, which she tried out of principle.)"
Well, when you only tried four cases.....
I thought the Democratic Presidential race clearly showed that our country was more sexist than racist...now I read this...
Voters are incredibly unin or misin formed...such is life.
I think that's exactly why those 4 candidates did not win.
AHCL glad you changed the subject. It was getting a little vitreolic. There is certainly a bias against voting for ethnic sounding names and that has been going on for decades. If her name had been Jane, Mikeshia (sp) would have been elected even though the electriate didn't know her. Mark is lucky.
Up here in old Missou I purposely didn't vote in any of the judicial "retention" races or local races where I didn't know the candidates. Too bad that didn't happen in Houston.
To believe that Mekisha Murray was purposely discriminated against because of her name you have to believe that people voted straight ticket for Obama, and then purposely de-selected Mekisha, while keeping other minority names selected. Balderdash.
I don't really care why she was not elected, but I am quite thankful she is not on the bench. She is not a good attorney, despite AHCL's generous post a few weeks back. Not good at all.
If you need any more proof, just look at the article itself. Any person with the slightest bit of common sense would never engage in such an interview. Good luck in 2012 Jane, or whatever your name will be then.
Stick to the Greensheet and DWLS cases.
If all people have to go on is the way your name reads when they go out to vote, your campaign wasn’t a very effective one. Your mom gave you an ethnic name? Boo-frickin-hoo. Some people only have to overcome obstacles like abuse, poverty and lack of opportunity on their path to success. She should change her name to Wendy Whiner.
“In elementary school, she'd come home crying after traumatic teasing from Clear Lake classmates who accused her of being white on the outside, black on the inside.”
Seriously? That’s it? Gimme a break. Some of us grew up facing real racial discrimination.
My mother gave me a stripper name. It doesn’t fit me in the least. The only thing that would be lamer than my name is changing it to fit standards of convention.

This is where I stopped reading your post.

And cared enough to comment on it. using HTML tags and everything. Thanks!
Astrid.
Don't blame me I voted for Orangello Jones!

You should see how I respond to people whose stripper names DO fit.
If I know nothing about the candidate, I will vote on whose name sounds the best.
She should have changed her name as soon as she knew it was going to be on the ballot. Wasnt there an Eddie Murphey movie that was based on this well known principle?
