Morris Overstreet Joins the Race for Harris County District Attorney

In a somewhat unanticipated move, former Court of Criminal Appeals Judge Morris Overstreet has announced his candidacy for Harris County District Attorney on the Democratic ticket.

He will be running against defense attorney Kim Ogg in the primary.

I only know Judge Overstreet in passing, but he's always been very nice to me.  To be honest, I was unaware of all of his credentials.  I didn't realize he was a former-prosecutor and I certainly didn't know he was formerly on the Court of Criminal Appeals.  He has an extremely impressive resume and a very interesting background.

I was anticipating the primary season to be kind of quiet in 2016.  Looks like I was wrong.  Kim Ogg should be very concerned.

I wonder why he has the judicial campaign fairness act disclaimer at the bottom of his ad. That doesn't apply to DA's. It's little things like that, the spit and polish of a campaign, that are magnified in a real race. Not ready for prime time type of thing.

Um, "spit and polish?"

Need I remind you who the Democratic candidate for DA was in 2012?

Kim and Devon are toast. Dallas County here we come!

I can't wait to see which democratic candidate the Chronicle will endorse
Problematic for their editorial board

Anon 7:29 are you friggin' kidding? The Chronicle is giddy having multiples fawning over the prospect of Harris County DA Morris Overstreet!
Kim Ogg will be easily dismissed and the Chronicle's agenda driven crosshairs will now target Devon Anderson.

Murray, who exactly was the Republican candidates in 2012? It was a farce on both sides of the ticket.

Belinda Hill ought to run……f*ck the self righteous "kingmakers"!

Interestingly enough, Overstreet in his race for the Court of Criminal Appeals defeated the first African-American to occupy a statewide office, Judge Louis Sturns. Sturns, a Republican, was appointed to the court by Bill Clements in 1990 but lost to Overstreet, the Democratic nominee, in the general election that fall.

Hey Anon 8:59, Mike Anderson was the Republican candidate in 2012. He became the nominee after he smoked the incumbent in the primary.

Here is the real question though. Who will David Jennings and Don Hooper support in the Democrat primary?

Anon 3:49,

Nobody believes your pretentious crap anymore. The Harris County 2012 Republican Primary was a Machiavellian's masquerade of virtue--Mike smoked us all.

Can someone please explain the relevance of the cowboy hat to either policing or the legal practice? He might as well use a unicycle or a clown hat.

Anon 12:29,

Hat in hand demonstrates humility with an attitude of respect for someone powerful i.e. the Harris County voter.

Usage notes: said about someone who is hoping to get something they want i.e. become the elected DA of Harris County

Etymology: based on the custom of men removing their hats to show respect, and on the idea that people beg (ask for money) by holding out a hat i.e. seeking campaign contributions.

Hey Lee,

Cowboy hats make short lawyers appear taller. Dick "Sore Loser" DeGuerin can confirm that.

Hah. Cowboy hats will never make your hands or feet look bigger.

So according to the Harris County Democratic party website, Overstreet has not officially filed yet. Two filed candidates are Kim Ogg and Lloyd Oliver.

How awesome is that?

December 14th is a long way off for both party filings……….there's still hope.
