All Quiet on the Western Front

I'm spending the first part of this week in San Antonio for a Continuing Legal Education seminar, which is a real Barn-Burner, let me tell you. There's Wi-Fi which is allowing to spend countless hours browsing the Internet and checking my e-mails, which helps pass the time. Yesterday, I got an e-mail from my best friend in Austin remarking that things are awfully quiet on the blog during those down times where the Branch Davidians haven't screwed anything up lately, but I guess that's just the nature of the game.

Hell, even Rage seems to be hibernating.

But apparently the Lykos Administration has finally realized if they quit doing stupid crap then I wouldn't have much to write about. It's a solid plan, and one I don't mind at all.

Maybe I'll write a book or something in my down time!

The only thing of note really coming out of the 6th Floor is actually a lack of action. The Division Chief of Grand Jury retired from the Office a couple of months ago, and the Gang still hasn't caught up on corresponding personnel moves that need to be made. Word has it that based on some, um, spending indiscretions, the Office doesn't have the money in the budget to promote anyone to the Division Chief level.

It's not really all that big of a deal, though. Being the Division Chief of Grand Jury is kind of like being a Red-Shirt Golfer when it comes to job difficulty and stress. It doesn't really need a true division chief to handle it. Quite frankly, that would be a waste of money.

So it is kind of hard to criticize the Gang for that particular move. However, they have been sitting on their hands for weeks and weeks now on other Office moves, which isn't quite as acceptable. Moving courts is a regular occurrence within the D.A.'s Office, although it is often stressful. Prosecutors have to wrap up their caseloads and leave them in a presentable form to their successors. Advanced notice is needed, but the moves need to get made.

Lykos and her Gang do need to get off their butts and make their moves.

But other than that, folks, it's all quiet on the Western Front.

I have heard rumors that Lykos herself has been meeting with the real prosecutors and not the pretenders to the crown (people she hired) asking about ideas for the office. Any truth to that rumor?

Murray Newman said...

Yes, that's my understanding as well. She does appear to be asking the people who actually DO the job how to do it. That only took 9 months.

Give us some highlights of your seminar. Who is the best speaker?

Murray Newman said...

Well, so far, the highlight has been going to Dirty Nellie's for drinks last night.

The class is on pre-recorded video so they aren't doing big speaker introductions. So far from Harris County, I've seen Ted Wilson, Randy Schaffer and Grant Shiner. My friend, Lisa Tanner from the AG's Office also spoke. Other than that I don't know the names of most of the speakers.

Make no mistake---Lykos' "meetings" with prosecutors were nothing more than a way for her to say she had a meeting. She acted like she was interested in ideas, but she clearly was not. Anyone with a brain who was at any of the sessions will tell you that.

"Email me your ideas" isn't information gathering, it's a brush off.

Why did Pat Lykos ever run for DA in the first place? I mean really, what was her point, politics aside?

"I mean really, what was her point, politics aside?"

You can't put politics aside. That's the sole reason she ran.

Lisa Tanner is awesome! My hero!

Rumor has it that Lykos is also actually looking for a case to try. For all you that said she wouldn't not, get ready. Day by day, she is slowly proving those who want her to fail wrong.

Please, God, let this happen.

I would pay to see Lykos try a case and I don't mean sitting at counsel table with a real prosecutor doing the work nor do I mean trying a case that any first year law student could try and win.

Day by day Lykos has been failing and continues to fail. Anon 9:53 many of us feared what Lykos would do to the office since we all knew the stories of her conduct on the bench but still hoped when she hired Jim and Roger the the office would continue to be the premier DAs office of Texas. It is not the premier DAs office in Texas, it is a shell of what it once was.

No chance in hell Lykos tries a case.

I dissected a fetal pig back in high school so I'm putting in for chief of surgery at Methodist Hospital. It's a really big hospital with lots of unqualified surgeons and I'm going to use my complete lack of experience to fix the corruption over there. Heck, I might even hire my old lab partner, Wee Man Jimmy, and the 2 of us can do a liver transplant on the Chuckster.

Anon 9:53:
Rumor has it your drug screen came back positive. Time to fire up your crack pipe and put in for a 6th floor position.

When will the 6th floor smoking lounge be up and running so crackhead 9:53 will not have to continue smoking on the sidewalks and gutters of 1201 with the troll? It really reflects poorly on the office not to mention the stench which is triggering the office pooch's asthma and diarrhea.

Seems to me that she could find one to try fairly quickly. Any Monday morning the #3's probably have 10 set, to say nothing of any county court. Hope she looks there, so no one gets hurt. Sheila ramp up the press.

Guess you haven't heard about what they did to Denise "Dee" Laskowski(sp) yet. All is not quiet...

Anonymous said...

Or what they did to Cindy. They moved her out of PIG because of her association with Eloise. I feel bad for her, she's been in that division for at least 10 years. Guess we are not suppose to trust our friends beause we could be guilty by association.

I left town. Permanently. I have not heard what happened to Dee. She is wonderful! What happened????? Please fill me in.

Kimberley Miller said...

I have jsut heard what happened to Dee. She is the best secretary in Misdemeanor- if not the whole darned office. If she moved something in your office- it was better the way she did it than the way you had it. I assure you this is true, as I worked with her for a while. She adjusted my system for me- I learned to do it her way- and you know what???????? It works better than anyone else's!!! She is the hardest worker I've ever seen at that office. She made my life a heck of a lot easier when I worked with her. I had it way better in her court than in most others- BECAUSE OF HER. I've never met anyone who did not agree.

Whoever made a big deal about her love of structure needs a reality check! You don't know the best way to do everything. Experience is worth SO MUCH!!!! SOME people at the office know how to do things better than you do. You don't have to take their advice if you don't want to take it. But- you should deal with them yourself.

Kimberly, you are so young and do not understand the new and improved Lykos style of management, experience only creates incompetence. If you did it that way and Lykos did not hire you, then it is the wrong way. In fact, I understand Lykos is working on reinventing the wheel, it simply has been used too long and is clearly defective.

Anonymous said...

Re invent the wheel? She was there telling the cavemen how to do it.

Anonymous said...

So what happened?

Anonymous said...

Kim,

While I respect your opinion that Dee is a good/great secretary, she should have no right to reorganize ANYTHING that an ADA has done, whether it be their office, purse, or whatever. She should not be crossing out/re writing "to do's" on files. That's not her job. She has specific duties, and she should stick to those.

I'm sure everyone would appreciate suggestions on how to do their jobs more efficiently, but don't do it behind someone's back. That's wrong and inappropriate. She works for them, after all.
