The First Anderson/Oliver D.A. Debate

No, I'm not kidding.

On Sunday morning, July 22nd, 2012, Fox 26 will be airing the first debate between the Republican and Democrat candidates for Harris County District Attorney.  Former Judge Mike Anderson will be facing off against Lloyd Oliver regarding their ideas for the future of the Office.

HCCLA President Chris Tritico played a large part in getting this event together and I'm hopeful that you all will participate.

The debate will be taped and then played in segments on Sunday morning at 6:10 a.m., 6:40 a.m., and 7:10 a.m.  Yes, that is very early for a Sunday morning, so don't forget to set your DVRs.  Chris has stated that the debate will be very viewer driven and your questions are welcomed.

If you have questions to be posed to either candidate, you can ask them on Fox 26 Facebook page.  Or you can ask them in the comments here and I will forward them on for you.

Thank to Chris and Fox 26 for putting this together.  I'm sure this will be interesting.

The only differences between Lloyd Oliver and Pat Lykos:
1. Gender
2. Lloyd is prettier
3. Pat hasn't ever been arrested
4. Lloyd is a Democrat and Pat is Republican
5. Lloyd has at least tried a lawsuit

What they have in common:
Neither is remotely qualified to be DA.

DVR is set. Lloyd is a bumbling idiot

Mr Oliver,
What can you say that will instill any hope in me that you want to be the DA to see justice done, because all I see is a man who wants a steady pay check for 4 years....

Murray,

If you could pass these questions on:

Candidates: During her reign, Pat Lykos cut salaries of all staff members by reducing intake pay; while also giving raises to the senior administration on the 6th floor. She has also recently given raises to certain staff, but not all. Will you work to make sure that all DA staff are given raises and will you work to restore intake pay to what it used to be?

There are many specialized divisions in the office, are there any that you see abolishing and are there any that you may start?

There is a lot of "dead weight" around the office such as felony #2's who have plateaued and won't make chief, secretaries who are lazy and rude, and investigators who don't work very hard. What are your plans to sort through the "dead weight" once you take office?

Who do you have in mind to be part of the senior leadership?

Are there any formed ADAs that you would ask to come back?

Thanks.

If the Chad Holley case is reset until after the election, will Mike have someone new try the cases?

I have not settled on a candidate yet, but all I have seen are ad hominem attacks against Lloyd. Qualifications beyond the statute are elusive and very subjective. We did at one time have a "qualified" DA charge him with a crime without success. So maybe he is not the bumbling idiot he is accused of being just as he was not guilty of the criminal charge. If he is so unqualified why bother to watch the debate, surely he can't win...As a second career attorney I am disappointed by the lack of concern of ADA's that I deal with on a regular basis for the withholding of Brady material by law enforcement while holding their ears and going "lalalalalalala". Maybe a defense minded DA could instill in the office the duty to do justice. DA's need to go after corrupt law enforcement practices and hold their feet to the fire when they refuse to turn over evidence that we all know exists...video's that blow reasonable suspicion for the arrest that always seem to be lost or unavailable due to a "malfunction". When a defense attorney diligently seeks this information it is amazing how long LE stalls providing it and often late in the game make weak claims of unintentional disposal. The case law is not helpful and requires a showing of intent to destroy evidence. They are taking advantage and the frequency is evidence of intent that the DA turns a blind eye to. Law enforcement will stop the nonsense if the DA would drop cases where law enforcement agencies frequently fail to turn in evidence that we all know they have or should have according to their video policy.

Will either candidate allow the prosecutors to have any discretion ? It is terrible to hear a prosecutor say that they know a case should be dismissed but it is too much trouble to explain

Perhaps someone should ask Lloyd Oliver, again, how many children he has. In an earlier televised public forum, he stated he has 1 daughter. I beg to differ. He has 2 daughters and 1 son. I should know, as I am his "other" daughter, his first born...the one he had no part in raising. Nothing like watching your father deny your existence on national television. Go Team Anderson!

Jade said...

Kimberly - I now understand why my Dad, Don Hooper, is supporting your Dad. Like your Dad, my Dad also denies my existence. I am Don Hooper's last born (maybe?),that he has had no part in raising. I concur that there is nothing worse than having a dad deny your existence. Kimberly - I hope I grow up with your sense of humor! Go Team Anderson!

Kimberly--

I've known Lloyd a while, and trust me, you're better off without him in your life. Just pretent he's in prison, as he's come close to being several times.

Anonymous said...

Kimberly and Jade I am so sorry that your parent chose to deny you. Do not let that have any impact upon your life. I imagine you both are far better off for not having contact with either of those jerks. Those sperm donors should not be able to impact your life now. Chin up, smile and just keep on going. They have no heart as well as limited intelligence. They are the ones that will have lost the most in the end.

To Kimberly and Jade:

As a parent, my relationship with my children is the MOST precious and wonderful thing in my life. I would not trade it for anything.

If your fathers have made the choice not to have relationships with you both, it means they are either selfish, self-centered, immature, stupid, or deficient in some other way.

That is THEIR problem - not yours. It is a comment about THEM - not YOU. They made the choice. They must own and live with it.

Don't for one second think that there is something wrong with you - something is really wrong with the man who fathers a child - but is not a father to him or her.

And - for that person not to even have any shame or guilt about a decision like that - even further comment on his character and make-up.

Question: "Lloyd, why were you born?"

Kimberly said...

Thank all of you for your support and encouragement. Lloyd gave me life, but that's pretty much IT. He gave up his parental rights when I was 5 to prevent having to pay child support to my mother. He had no contact with me until I was 18 when I found him working as an attorney in Houston. During my lifetime, Lloyd never financially supported my me or my mother. I understand people make mistakes when they are young and have to live with their decisions. But when asked about his children, why would he announce on national TV that he has ONE? He has THREE. I suspect its because he doesnt want to own up to his lack of parental and financial responsibility of his first two children. I wonder if Lloyd would mind paying my mother the back child support he owes her? For the rocord, I have a fantastic mother who has spent her entire life loving, raising and supporting me, and for that I am grateful....that's what matters.
I wonder if Mr. Anderson would care to discuss child support issues with Mr. Oliver in the upcoming debate? Hmmmmm.....

Anyone have a list of who is leaving at the end of the month?

Anonymous said...

Leitner is leaving soon. Will she replace him, or will it be another vacancy like with Barnhill?

Bigger question--who the hell would want that job?!!!!

Anonymous said...

Nobody is leaving, just two Jan. 1, is what I have been told by a good source.

Anonymous said...

Lloyd... how are you going to be the highest ranking officer in our County's criminal justice dept. when you obviously have the morals of a degenerate and zero character? Who are you to prosecute anyone?? For one, you dodged child support which makes you none other than a Deadbeat Dad. Then to add insult to injury, you know Kimberly & her brother are your children because you have made contact with them; yet you deny their existence to the viewing public whom you expect to support your sorry butt in this election. I'll be with Kimberly at the celebration party when you lose!!

Jigmeister said...

Off topic. I think the "joker" need the old Harris county DP treatment. I would happily come out of retirement to try the A hole.

Jigmeister said...

Back on topic. If that were to happen in Houston, anyone think Lloyd would know how? Bet Mike does.

Want to hear a real joke?

Lykos actually has the audacity to leave this weekend to attend the National District Attorney's Association (NDAA) Summer Conference in Mystic, CT. What a waste of tax payer funds! She ought to be too embarrassed to show her face there but I'm sure she will get her daily fix narcissistic attention there.

Anonymous said...

Your a fool! Why would she be embarrassed, she has done nothing wrong.

Anonymous said...

Don,

In case you missed it, on May 29th she got her butt kicked and is being thrown out of office for being incompetent.

Most folks assume that would be embarrassing.

Anonymous said...

She hasn't done anything right.

Anonymous said...

To be fair Lykos like John Bradley is on the ndaa board of directors so the county is probably not paying for anything from this trip.

Anonymous said...

Don--it's "you're" not "your". But thanks for playing

This debate will be live on Fox 26, not taped and that is why your live participation via twitter and Facebook are key.

Is there a way to view debate for those who missed it?

Recap from my DVR:
6:10: Meeting the candidates. Oliver appears sweaty and nervous, clearly has a notepad full of notes he is pawing at. He says he won the D campaign due to dumb luck and says his experince was gained in the Harris County criminal justice system school of hard knocks. Anderson says his win was certainly not luck but due to the hard work and efforts of those who want change and integrity brought back to the HCDA office. He then went over his experience as 17 years working for and learning from Johnny Holmes. First question posed from social media, will you allow prosecutors to use their own discretion and dismiss cases as they see fit without worry from upper level. Both basically said yes, but clearly worded better by Anderson. 6:10 round goes to Anderson.

6:40 a.m. Social media question regarding Lykos promise of transparency in the office and will this now be seen out of the office with a new DA. Oliver praised Lykos and said there are still a few bad apples in there, like there are in any bushel, he then went on to change subject to Divert program and his praise of it. It appears he is courting any lost Lykos supporters who may still be undecided. Anderson responded by quickly commenting that Divert is not legal and quoted statistics about deaths in HC due to DUI and the need to enforce laws as they are written. He then brought it back to the transparency question and defined what that means and how with him as DA he will do what is right as the law states and lay the cards out and let the chips fall where they may, and if you know you are doing the right thing, it shouldn't be a concern. 6:40 win, Anderson by a landslide.
7:10 Question: Does HC need to remain the leader on death penalty cases or are there policy changes that need to be made in this area? Oliver: Praised Lykos as "one of the best" He said the law in TX is to execute someone in a capital type case and Lykos policy was to do just that. He said he would content to her policies on the subject. Then Oliver asked an online question about will he include social media in the workings of the DA's office, he said we need a citiizen intake department so people who have issues they would like to see prosecuted can come directly to that office with their concerns. Anderson replied by informing that the DA's office has a vehicle by which someone can come to the DAs office and file a formal complaint, its been around for about 30 years and any citizen can come in and voice concern. Anderson also responded by saying he would welcome questions via social media, he touched on using an individual's FB page to help prove they commit certain crimes if they have posted pictures of themselves doing it and then said they didn't, but then went on to comment about the rules of evidence will apply, when asked about defendants right to a fair trial with regards to social media. Murray stepped up and asked about Anderson's participation with star court and would that experience would shape how you act as DA. Mike explained how this drug rehab program changed lives of those who participated and seemed very proud of it, he explained how the program worked, didn't really say it would follow him into the DA job though.

Anonymous said...

7:40 Newman then asked Oliver said star court is a good program but needs to be improved. He said the only good program is to lock them up for about 6 months to get the monkey off their back. Murray then asked Oliver about his statement that smaller crimes "cookie crumb crimes" should not be prosecuted and what did he mean by that, Oliver responded lets not prosecute the cases where the complainant doesn't want to prosecute, lets go after the baby rapers and purse stealers, he didn't remember ever saying the term cookie crumb crimes. Anderson responded by quoting if the legislature says they are important, then we will follow the law and prosecute. he defended Oliver's statement that SAFP is the only thing that works for drug addicts not star court, Anderson reminded him that SAFP is part of the star program (apparently Oliver was absent from school of hard knocks the day they taught that). Question then came in via social media about using seizure money and how would it be used. Anderson responded by stating what is written in the law as to how it should be followed, it goes for training and for treatment programs, those guidelines will continue to be followed with regards to seized money. Oliver responded by saying the money should be used to make victims whole. Then question went out about what they would do once they took office. Oliver stated he would do something about people contributing $50,000 to his opponents campaign, said it is bribery and outside of politics one would go to jail for bribery. He said he would look into endorsements individuals pay. Anderson responded by taking offense at Olivers comments and said anyone who contributed to his campaign did so knowing they would get a good government by contributing, he says ask anyone in the court house he is "square business and that is what is important". First day in office he tells his ADAs they are here to serve the public and he serves them and stands behind them, do what is right by the law and rules of ethics. Win: Anderson.
In Oliver's closing comments he said he doesn't take campaign contributions from attorneys, he claimed Mike only worked half days as judge and doubted he would ever be in the office as DA. Anderson's closing comments, he reiterated his experience as a prosecutor under Holmes and his time spent as judge, declared how he loved the DAs office during his time there. He sees a need to serve the public. He wants to have a hand in making HC DA's office one of the best in the country. Obviously an Anderson win overall. It appears someone has been coaching Oliver and he is playing up to any leftover Lykos supporters, but he hasn't done his own homework and doesn't seem to have any clue of how things work in a DA office or with regards to the laws in place. ANDERSON WIN, hands down.

And he has never paid one cent of child support for either of the "other" children. He claims to be a member of West U Baptist but can find no one there who has ever met or heard of him. He hates people of color and has only one use for women. Lloyd is not only an unqualified attorney but an unqualified human being!
