Family

I'm at a bit of a disadvantage in writing this little post tonight, because the person in my thoughts right now doesn't want anyone to know that they are not doing well.

That being said, it brings to mind that for all of the adversarial meetings between prosecutors and the defense bar that happen on a daily basis in the CJC, we remain, in a way, a family.

When rookie prosecutor Emily Asel learned she had cancer during her pregnancy, prosecutors from Harris County, members of the Texas District and County Attorneys Association, and members of the Defense Bar in Harris County all united to do everything that they could to help.

When Defense Attorney Mack Arnold suffered a stroke earlier this year (please see the blurb to the right side of this blog), members of both the prosecution and the Defense Bar united to do everything that they could do to help.

As much as we do battle every day with each other, I would like to think that at the end of the day, those of us who practice criminal law within the CJC are a sort of make-shift family (albeit an extremely dysfunctional one, at times).

As much as we disagree, bicker, snipe, and talk trash about each other, we all actually seem to care about our adversaries. It reminds me of the old saying that those damn Aggies have about their school: "From the outside looking in, there is no understanding it. From the inside looking out, there is no explaining it."

Whether you can explain it or not, I'm proud to be a part of it.
