Uncle Pete

My great-uncle, Pete Newman, passed away last week at the age of 86.  He was the youngest brother of my paternal grandfather, Louis Newman.  I didn't know Uncle Pete all that well, but I always enjoyed talking to him whenever I got the chance, because he was wildly entertaining.  The last time I saw him was a couple of years ago, at his brother, Jim's, funeral.  He was sitting on his walker, smoking a cigarette and talking about grabbing a beer.

The reason I'm writing this post is because I thought his obituary in the local paper was pretty entertaining, as well.  So I thought I would just pass it along.

He was a damn good man.

Great Obituary Murray. He reminds me a lot of my own great uncle Joe, who passed away some years back. Uncle Joe was a dedicated raconteur, whether he was regaling us with tales of running a BBQ joint in Georgia, driving a cab in Fort Lauderdale, Fla, or describing his gall bladder operation in more detail than we ever wanted to know. He was a character for sure!

Sorry to hear about your Uncle Pete, but that sounds like a good life. In fact, the first time I met you I think you were smoking a cig and talking about getting a beer.

And that's a fantastic picture at the bottom--I don't like paints, but I always like to see a real working-class rig on a horse. Uncle Pete knew what he was doing, even if he rode lefty.
